Middle Years Programme, MYP
|
One of the goals of MYP is that every student will be stimulated to, from their own conditions, develop their knowledge and skills as much as possible, and receiving international insight and understanding. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches and intercultural awareness to attain a holistic viewpoint of knowledge. Good communication allows the student to become an excellent world citizen. The program stresses the respect for cultural differences. According to the pedagogical model in MYP, the student is in the centre. Around the student are “Areas of Interaction” that, together with the subject areas from MYP, establish the pedagogical model. |
Areas of interaction
The Areas of Interaction consists of five disciplines that provide the main focus of MYP.
From these disciplines, the students discover the connection between subject content and the world outside of school. When one subject is being treated, one or some of the Areas of Interaction will be included in the teaching. The disciplines are:
Approaches to Learning
How does one learn? How do we communicate what we have learned? How do we know what we have learned is true? The goal is for the student to complete their studies in the best way and being given the tools for life-long learning.
Community and Service
The students are encouraged to be aware and interested by the world outside of school. The student will learn compassion, responsibility and not to simply think selfishly.
Health and Social Education
Out of this discipline, students prepare themselves for a mentally and physically healthy lifestyle. The students’ experiences in this area should develop a sense of responsibility for their own well-being and for their physical and social environment. Here, the questions around issues such as ethics, ANT, sexual education and mobbing, are treated.
Environment
Within MYP, environmental education plays a central role. Students will become conscious of the bond between humanity and the global environment. This are includes subjects such as health and environment, global warming and overpopulation, environmental politics and technical development.
Homo Faber
This discipline is aiming for one’s own creativity for improving the quality of life. The students acquire an understanding for important cultural and historical changes along with scientific discoveries.
Subjects
In MYP, there are eight different subject groups. The subjects are sometimes studied isolated and sometimes as subject overlapping themes, so that a deeper level of learning of the subjects is being created within a transdisciplinary framework.
